Starting May 2024, secondary school teachers can apply for residence directly from abroad!
Calling all secondary teachers! New Zealand is actively seeking qualified teachers and is offering a faster path to residency to address current staffing shortages. Announced today by Immigration and Education Minister Erica Stanford, this exciting new initiative will make New Zealand an even more attractive destination for skilled educators.
Why the Change?
New Zealand schools are facing a shortage of secondary teachers, particularly in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and specific regions. This initiative aims to ensure all students receive a world-class education by attracting highly qualified teachers from overseas.
What are the Benefits?
> Streamlined Process: Secondary teachers can now apply for residency directly, without first needing work experience in New Zealand. This provides greater certainty and a quicker path to settling permanently.
> Increased Attractiveness: By offering a fast track to residency, New Zealand becomes more competitive in the global market for skilled teachers.
What about Primary Teachers?
While the focus is currently on secondary teachers, there are still opportunities for primary educators. Most primary teacher roles remain on the Work to Residence pathway, and there’s also a residency pathway through the Skilled Migrant Category.
Investing in Education
The New Zealand government is committed to building a strong and sustainable education system. This initiative to attract overseas teachers complements ongoing efforts to increase the number of New Zealand-trained teachers.
Are You a Qualified Secondary Teacher?
If you’re a passionate and experienced secondary teacher looking for a new adventure, New Zealand welcomes you! With its stunning scenery, excellent quality of life, and a strong focus on education, New Zealand could be the perfect place to continue your teaching career.
While this may sound simple and exciting it is very important to note, to qualify for this pathway you need to find employment prior to applying for a Resident Visa. Also, not all overseas trained teachers are qualified for registration in as a Teacher. Read here the process for registration with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand.
